Youth Summer Program – Camp Counselor (8 Positions) Hours: 30 Hours (1 week) – $20/hr

Camp counsellors are responsible for the supervision of campers as well as planning and running camp-wide programming activities. Camp counsellors work to enhance the campers’ experience at CTAO while taking responsibility for their health and well-being. Camp Counsellors are responsible for ensuring that campers know which activities they have to attend during the day, that they are properly prepared and that they are punctual. During all activities at camp, Camp Counsellors must take a participatory role with the campers. Camp Counsellors must know the whereabouts of their campers at all times. In addition, Camp Counsellors are will directly report to the camp coordinator.

Camp Responsibilities

  • · To provide a quality community summer children’s program for ages 8 – 16 that includes a variety of educational, social, and physical learning experiences
  • · Participating in children orientation and training
  • · Organizing and facilitating engaging camp activities
  • · Help in developing new programs and activities for camp
  • · Supervising groups of campers;
  • · Promoting a healthy environment for campers
  • · Developing and practicing personal leadership skills.
  • · Greet and welcome all campers each day
  • · Orient all campers to camp rules on first day
  • · Remain visible and accessible to staff and campers
  • · Coordinate daily cleanup of all program areas and the Counselor workspace and all areas of the facility.

Required Skill

  • · Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • · Ability to work with a wide variety of ages and demographic groups
  • · Ability to take charge and motivate others
  • · Ability to supervise peers of a close age
  • · Ability to observe and assess camper behavior, enforce safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior management techniques
  • · Enthusiasm, sense of humor, patience, self-control
  • · First Aid and CPR Certificate an asset

YOUTH SUMMER CAMP PROGRAM DETAILS

Objectives of organizing summer camp for Tibetan Youngsters

Our basic objectives are:

➔ To expose Tibetan youngsters to their culture, language and the essence of Buddhist philosophy.
➔ Introduction to Tibetan traditional songs and music (musical instruments) dance including circle dance (Gorshey)
➔ To create an environment for Tibetan youngsters to develop friendship among themselves
➔ Develop and demonstrate unique Tibetan cultural values of compassion, humility, and respect.
➔ Healthy Bites – Breakfast and healthy lunch served daily – children will learn to cook traditional Tibetan dishes, such momo, mo-thuk, phing-sha and Tingmo etc
➔ To participate in wellness, sports and outdoor activities

The basic structure of the one week camp’s program is research based group activities, assisted by the facilitators. We will have workshops providing background information; guest speakers will be invited to discuss important topics and to interact with the participants (questions and answer opportunities).

CTAO will provide Internet services and reading materials for research and to assist the participants in their various camp activities.

On most occasions, the participants will be divided into small teams, All classes, sports and recreation activities will include leadership building exercises and opportunities for personal development (i.e. rotating group leaders, public speaking roles, role-playing, etc.)
