This year marks the 85th Birthday of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama (HHDL). Every year on July 6th, Tibetans Canadians living in Ontario come together in many numbers to celebrate His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s birthday at the Tibetan Canadian Cultural Centre (TCCC), located in Etobicoke, Ontario. However, this year has been a very difficult and challenging year for everyone around the world and it is no different for the Tibetans living in Ontario. Due to the pandemic situation and the directive from public health, Tibetans this year will be celebrating this auspicious occasion in a creative way with a live virtual ceremony and a 3 hour music concert. We are honoured to have His Holiness Gyalwa Karmapa Rinpoche as our Chief Guest and Geshe Thupten Jinpa (principal translator of His Holiness the Dalai Lama) who will deliver a talk on the “Four Commitments” of HHDL. Dignitaries from the three levels of government and friends of Tibet and local Tibetan NGOs, along with Tibetan children will also share their birthday messages during this auspicious occasion. The morning program will be followed by a 3 hour long virtual concert consisting of 14 Tibetan traditional and contemporary artists from different parts of the world. A detailed program for the event will be available below in the next day or two.
This year (Year 2020) has also been declared by the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) as the year of gratitude to His Holiness the Dalai Lama. Tibetans around the world will be celebrating and organizing many events this year to not only show respect to His Holiness but also to recognize and appreciate all of his achievements. Tibetans in Ontario would like to say “Thank You” to His Holiness by distributing 1000 hot meals in the GTA (at shelters with food programs and frontline staff at Healthcare facilities) on His Holiness’ Birthday. This is one of the ways for the centre to bring awareness in and around the community and to share the message of love, compassion and kindness that His Holiness has bestowed on us. On the other hand, it is a small way for the local Tibetans to give back to the community.
To celebrate this year as the Year of Profound Gratitude to His Holiness, TCCC will be initiating activities every month until the end of the year by engaging the youth to understand how His Holiness has dedicated and contributed his entire life not only in the preservation and promotion of Tibetan culture and heritage but also his contribution to the entire world.
