Known in the Tibetan language as <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">drokpa<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">, translating as <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">\u2018high-pasture people\u2019, there are an estimated two million Tibetan-<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">speaking nomads spread over a vast area. Throughout the Tibetan <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">areas of what is now the People\u2019s Republic of China and in the <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">northern parts of Bhutan, Indi<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">a and Nepal, nomads are an <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">important element in the local economy and society wherever they <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">are found. Yet, our image of Tibetan nomads is often romanticized. <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">Influenced by Hollywood movies, the latest talk by the Dalai Lama, <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">the media campaigns of the Free Tibet movement or Chinese <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">propaganda, a real picture of thei<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">r lives is missing.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Nomads are still found on the Tibetan Plateau and in the Himalaya.
